The Bray
march 4–april 30, 2010
The Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana has been at the center of the ceramics world since its inception in 1951. Artists such as Rudy Audio and Peter Voulkos were early artist in residence, and their work drew international attention to the Bray’s programs. Gallery artists Gerit Grimm, Jim Koudelka, Joe Pintz, Kowkie Durst, Sam Morgan and Victoria Christen have all benefitted from Bray residencies, and Pat Horsley is a former Bray workshop presenter. Their work as well as their thoughts about the Bray will be on view in The Gallery from March 4th through April 30.
Museum of Contemporary Craft’s exhibition David Shaner: Land Art, as well as David Shaner’s contributions to the ceramics community, inspired this gallery feature. As Director of the Bray, David Shaner was instrumental in keeping the foundation alive after the commercial brickyard that had originally supported it closed in 1960. The Bray’s new state-of-the-art residency center is named in honor of David and his wife Ann Shaner.
