Sam Morgan

“On some level, all my works allude to spirituality and other visceral qualities. Besides the beauty and usefulness of my work, I hope the user gains the deeper meaning of my pottery.”
Sam Morgan creates functional, contemplative work with rich surfaces. He is inspired by former Bauhaus faculty member Josef Alber’s color theory, which guides his delicate, expressive approach to color fields. With layered glazes and soft texture, he sees his work as inciting an unfolding connection between object, user and artist.
Morgan is head of the ceramics department at Portland Community College Cascade campus, where he has been on faculty since 1998. He has been a resident at the Archie Bray Foundation, and has shown his work widely throughout the United States, including the Society of Arts & Crafts, Boston and the Clay Studio, Philadelphia. He holds an MFA in ceramics from Alfred University.
Sam Morgan participated earlier this year in Museum of Contemporary Craft’s exhibition Call + Response. He is a new addition to The Gallery, joining in the summer of 2009.
