Alfred Edelman: Urban Compositions

ESSAY BY KATHLEEN DEAN MOORE AND POETRY BY PAULANN PETERSON

Alfred Edelman: Urban Compositions is the second in a series of books that feature the photographic work of Alfred Edelman. We find in Edelman’s intentional, rigorous framing, a modernist aesthetic that expresses materiality, utility, and a sense of history. Soon after the 2010 publication of Alfred Edelman: The Studio Prints, we continued to be intrigued with the hundreds of negatives still within the archives. Just as with the photographer who shoots in black and white, we were drawn to the lines, shadows and shapes, the contrast and textures.

We then invited two renowned Oregon literary figures, Kathleen Dean Moore and Paulann Petersen, to spend a day with the negatives and choose a selection of images from which to produce original writings influenced by Edelman’s urban compositions. The images, which capture Portland, Oregon from 1968–1985, document an aesthetic story of urban life.
